INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (May 14, 2018) – Making their debut in the Verizon IndyCar Series at the most famous race in all of the United States, Scuderia Corsa and the No. 64 will turn its first laps this week during the first official practice for the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500.
As opposed to traditional race weekends, one of the unique traditions of the Indianapolis 500 is the fact it operates as a two-week event. Tomorrow (Tuesday) features a full day of practice for rookie and veteran drivers, which includes Scuderia Corsa’s own Oriol Servià. From tomorrow through Friday, teams will have four complete days of practice, giving an exponential amount of time for on-track testing compared to other events.
This will be followed by two days of qualifying this upcoming weekend, where teams will set four consecutive laps on Saturday to determine their qualifying group for Sunday, where they will again set four laps to determine their grid position. In addition, as a unique change to the last several years, the race currently features more entries than the available 33 spots, meaning that some teams will not make the race known as “Bump Day”, putting an extra premium on a solid qualifying run. The team will then get two additional days of testing on Monday and Friday, before the historic Indy 500, known as the ‘Greatest Spectacle in Racing’, next Sunday, May 27.
While Scuderia Corsa is new to the series, the team will be joined by both a veteran driver and team to help navigate the next two weeks, partnering with driver Oriol Servià and the renowned Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL), a team who previously won the Indianapolis 500 in 2004, and is considered one of the strongest teams in the series.
Driver Oriol Servià on the Start of the “Month of May”
An Indianapolis veteran and fellow Southern California resident, Oriol Servià will join the team as a specialist of the speedway, having competed nine times previous, including leading several laps and with a best finish of fourth.
“I’m excited that we can finally begin,” stated Servià. “The Indianapolis 500 and the ‘Month of May’ is unlike anything else, and I’m excited to be part of such a great program. Obviously Scuderia Corsa has a great history of winning, and RLL is one of the best teams in IndyCar, so I’m excited to see how we all work together. Being new to this experience, I’m especially looking forward to introducing everyone at Scuderia Corsa to the many traditions and festivities in store, the entire experience is something they’ll never forget.”
Giacomo Mattioli, Scuderia Corsa Team Principal on Indy 500 Team Debut
“The tradition and heritage of the Indianapolis 500 is an experience we really look forward to taking in,” stated Mattioli. “The Verizon IndyCar Series is a great championship, and with a product that seems to only get stronger, so we’re eager to take our first steps in open-wheel at the ‘Racing Capital of the World’. The Indy 500 is something every team dreams of participating in, we’re all very excited about the opportunity.”
